Literacy and Development through Partnership

There are approx 1,000,000 Dagomba people who live in Dagbon, in Northern Ghana.  Approx 80% of the adults are unable to read or write in their mother tongue language, Dagbani, and only a small percentage are able to communicate in English.

As a non-governmental organisation, Literacy and Development through Partnership (LDP) is working alongside the Dagomba community, providing literacy training/support and identifying community development needs that will help provide a holistic approach to poverty reduction and development.

About 2,000 adults learn basic reading and writing in Dagbani each year. Approx 800 people a year go on to take a simple course in English (the language used for most school lessons in Ghana).

LDP also seeks to combine its reading and writing activities with developmental and economic activities.  Training is given in community development issues such as health, water and sanitation, agriculture, gender issues and education.  Economic projects, such as micro-credit, help people to put their new found literacy and development skills into practice.  This combined approach enables people to realise how key literacy is to further advancement in any area of basic need.
